The UAE is set to become a “Global Capital” for tolerance.

Every new year, a significant theme is expressed in the UAE. 2017 was the Year of Giving, 2018 was the Year of Zayed, and 2019 is set to be the Year of Tolerance. The president of the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has declared this year will highlight the UAE as a global capital for tolerance, instilling the values of co-existence and peace in local, regional and international communities.

Recalling the great heritage and vision founded by late H. H. Sheikh Zayed, the Year of Tolerance will focus on seven main pillars:

Pillar 1: Tolerance in Community
Promote values of tolerance within the family, and merge them with different co-existent cultures.

Pillar 2: Tolerance in Education
Solidify teachings supportive of the values of tolerance within all education systems within the country.

Pillar 3: Tolerance in the Workplace
Create a safe, tolerant, and unified workplace across all organizations, highlighting equality for all.

Pillar 4: Tolerance and Culture
Promote cultural tolerance by celebrating more than 200 nationalities residing in the country, and enhancing continuous interactions between them. The visit of Pope Francis will be a major event highlighting the Year of Tolerance.

Pillar 5: UAE Model of Tolerance
Establish the UAE as the global capital for tolerance between various cultures and civilizations.

Pillar 6: Tolerance in Legislation
Develop policy and regulations guaranteeing the sustainability of values and teachings supporting tolerance, dialogue, and unity among cultures.

Pillar 7: Tolerance in the Media
Broadcast values of tolerance and co-existence, as well as the UAE Model of Tolerance, across media platforms.

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, welcomed the announcement saying “Tolerance is a characteristic of advanced societies and a pre-requisite for cultural empowerment and prosperity. In 2019, we will work to institutionalize this value and lead the intellectual, media & research efforts required to promote tolerance in our region.”
